This is the first studio album produced by Rob Cavallo.
The title of the album is derived from two scenarios. "GrooGrux" is a nickname used for Carter Beauford, LeRoi Moore, and Tim Reynolds describing their vibe and energy with the rhythms they create together. "Big Whiskey" originated from a photo shoot the band did to promote the album. A drunken man asked the band for money to buy a "big whiskey" prompting Rashawn Ross to insist that it be used in the title.
